Dubrovačko primorje – Slano[:en]Dubrovnik coast – Slano

[:HR]Mediteran u punom sjaju

The Mediterranean in its full splendor

Slano is the administrative center of strategically very important, and therefore extremely vulnerable area of Dubrovnik Riviera. An exceptionally favorable geographic and traffic position was for this area a curse and a blessing – it had suffered numerous destructions throughout the history, including those of more recent date which we reluctantly recall. The strategic potential of this markedly Mediterranean municipality has been recognized since ancient times, as evidenced by the remains of ancient buildings and of a Roman military camp and the early Christian sarcophagi located in front of the Franciscan church.

Slano has approximately 550 inhabitants engaged in various activities – olive and vine growing, fishing; but a particular potential lies in developing and strengthening of tourism. Its beautiful, spacious bay is delightful due to numerous sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, and is an ideal shelter for ships and boats. A pleasant, typically Mediterranean climate was favorable to the proliferation of plants – Slano will enchant its visitors with scents of herbs – lavender, sage, bay leaf and wormwood, and the colorful vineyards, pine, olive, carob, almond and citrus trees. At the guests’ disposal there are a three-star and a five-star hotel (Osmine and Admiral), numerous campsites, rooms and apartments of private renters.

Apart from wonderful beaches, Slano offers the possibility of visiting the cultural and archaeological sites – the 16th century Franciscan church, numerous prehistoric forts, and a nearby Ohmučević mansion. A visit to Slano will meet the expectations of the pickiest guests, for this real Mediterranean oasis is proud of some valuable cultural treasures as well.
