KLIS

If you are traveling through the hinterland of Split, you are likely to come across the stunning, unforgetable view from the stone gates of Dalmatia – Klis. The settlement was established at the foot of the medieval fortress, whose strategic position has been recognized since the ancient times. Turks, Venetians, Austrians and Frenchmen have for centuries struggled to win over the Klis Fortress as if it was some kind of jewel, and the most famous name of its defense belongs to Captain Petar Kružić with his Uskoci who resisted Turkish attacks for 25 years.

If you visit this famous building, you will be amazed by the organised welcome of the warriors in picturesque historic uniforms, which will demonstrate their skills in specially prepared performances. A variety of well-preserved historical remains in the interior of the fortress, a real treat for lovers of cultural attractions, harmonious landscape and a beautiful view of Split and Central Dalmatia, will surely delight nature lovers. We particularly recommend a visit to the church of St. Vid. After a tour of the fortress and enjoying the view from 330m above sea level, try some of the local delicacies, that the households and taverns of Klis will offer. Have a glass of the refreshing quality wine or brandy, some delicious smoked ham and cheese, or a well known delicacy – the famous Klis lamb on a spit!
